Chris Ott's 2007 Team Hybrids Toyota Camry SE

Postby Chris O. on Wed Feb 07, 2007 1:39 am

Well, i'm really starting to get down to business on this car since the days are counting down to SBN in Daytona. Here are some pics of the dash bezel construction.

The stock dash in all it's glory. Not bad but it could be better.
The stock dash was basically 3 pieces, the radio, a/c conrtols, and pocket.
I have molded them into one piece, to give it a more integrated look.
First i started molding the bezel for a 9" screen to a Metra dash kit. I was shooting for a 10" but the 9" was very tight as it was. Then i molded that piece to the stock a/c control bezel.

Now i had to make room for my dvd player. After some measuring, i found that the only suitable place to mount the dvd player was just above where the shifter would sit in park. That would place it smack dab in between the a/c bezel and the pocket. So, they got molded together and i ended up with 1 piece. I kept some of the factory shapes, like the section right under the a/c and the indent on the bottom of the pocket to keep a factory look to it. This is what i came up with.

Here's a pic of it in the car. It's not perfect yet but you get the idea. It will be painted to match the stock metallic silver on the stock pieces.

The next project is molding in the controller for my source unit. I'll post updates as i progress.

Are you a janitor too? Look at all those keys on your keyring!

Looks nice man, great work. I did the same thing with my 240SX, and moulded three pieces together:

You didn't know i was a janitor? Yeah what i do is set up shop in the broomcloset and go do my rounds in between coats of filler.

Yeah, i was kinda thinking about the 240 dash when i decided to go that route. I really liked how yours turned out, real simple yet effective. Great minds think alike, huh.

Okay, here's the remote holder piece. I threw it together the other night to get a feel of how it would turn out. I'm not sure if i like it or not yet. Everyone that sees it in person likes it but i'm not sure if it goes with the factory integration theme i am trying to pull off. What do you guys think?

Image

I wanted to have the remote sit right where my wrist would normally lay so that it feels natural to use. At first i was going to motorize it out of the factory pocket but for the sake of time i needed to simplify it, at least for now.

On to the kicks and the rear deck.

I like the remote. I am working on a similar set-up in a certain vehicle I am working on...

Same basic idea...
